Across the private sector, workers are swallowing hard as their employers freeze salaries, cancel bonuses, and institute longer work days. America’s employees can see for themselves how steeply business has fallen off, which is why many are accepting cost-saving measures with equanimity — especially compared to workers in France, where riots and plant takeovers have become regular news. April Employment Report Showers Doubt on Detroit Bailout
The Obama Administration has used its clout to pressure many of Chrysler’s creditors to take large losses on their holdings while protecting the United Auto Workers (UAW). This will make lenders reluctant to extend secured loans to other heavily unionized companies, further aggravating the problem of unionized companies losing more jobs than non-union companies because they invest less. The weak job market shows that this is no time to manipulate the financial system to reward politically favored interest groups. Continue reading

During his presidential campaign, Barack Obama promised accountability and transparency. Last Tuesday, his administration broke that promise to yet another group. Department of Labor Secretary Hilda Solis betrayed rank and file union members by repealing vital reporting regulations that allowed members to see how union bosses were spending their hard-earned dues money.
